There are three administrative districts in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka. Trincomalee consisting of 2728.8 square Kilometers and Civil administration is done by dividing it into 11 Regional Secretariats. It has total population of 5175 including 23 Grama Niladhari divisions and a total land area of 397.3 square km s.
Though it was named as Gokanna where Aryans Landed in Sri Lanka for the first time, the name changed as Siri Gonamalaya with the time and finally the place was named as Trincomalee. This is mentioned in the books written by Archaeologists.
When considering the Regional Secretariat Regions under trincomalle Administrative district, Kanthale Regional Secretariat Region becomes the largest.It is consisting of a Total land area of 397.3 square km s and 23 Grama Niladhari Divisions.
The basis of the public of Kanthale which claims an agricultural life pattern throughout the history has become promulgated after the settling of families under the movements of agricultural states executed in Sri Lanka after the colonial age.This area can be identified as an area providing a huge contribution towards the agricultural sector centralized on the Basin of Mahaweli river and the main reservoir of Kanthale. At present the total population of the Kanthale Regional Secretariat consisting of 23 Grama Niladhari Divisions has become 51075.
This area which is included to the low country dry zone receives rainfall from monsoons according to the classification of climatic zones. The area receives the highest rainfall from the North Eastern Monsoon during the period of November to January. Stormy rainfall during the month of December is a hereditary characteristic about the pattern of rainfall The annual rate of rainfall is about 1400 mm’ A dry and high temperate climate can be seen most of the time during the year. According to the meteorological data it is fact that the annual temperature of the area is up to 30-32 degrees.
While groups of people included to all the three races are living there, The history of Kanthale runs back to the period of King Agbo II. In fact Kanthale region itself hits a highest rank in the Eastern Province historically. And also the location of the Kanthale lake which is considered as the heart of Trincomalee district increase its specialty.
